Apologies that I took so long to post this on my blog. Yu Yong Nian, a direct disciple of Wang Xiang Zhai and famous exponent of Da Cheng Quan and famous dental surgeon, died in Beijing on the 2nd of October 2013 at the age of 93.
Yu Yong Nian was born on the 31st of March, 1920, and graduated in 1942 from Tokyo Dental University in Japan. He was the head of the department of Dental Surgery at the Beijing Railways Central Hospital of the Railways Ministry (currently named: the Beijing Shijitan Hospital). He started to study Zhan Zhuang under the founder of Dachengquan - Wang Xiang Zhai in 1944. He started to use zhan zhuang to cure chronic diseases at the Beijing Railways Hospital in 1953. Through many years of diligent research and personal experience, he stated that "Zhan zhuang is the use of the material body and an exercise to increase the intake of oxygen to the body, and is primarily a means for using the intention to exercise the body." He also combined the training of the material body with the philosophy of Lao Zi's Tao Te Jing - "Holding the one, we do not depart from it, standing alone we change nothing", creating a system "where Wushu is combined with Psychology in a single system" and where "Lao Zi's philosophy is a blueprint of the Dao." He produced many books and treatises on Zhan Zhuang, and made many trips abroad to spread his zhan zhuang as a modality for healing. Master Yu was very skilled at zhan zhuang and Master Wang Xiang Zhai accorded him the elegant nickname - "Stone Stele." He combined traditional martial arts and modern medicine as well as ancient philosophy with modern mechanics in a single system, which was complete and highly effective. He trained a number of skilled disciples, such as Guo Gui Zhi, Li Mian Quan, Bai Yang, amongst others. The famous Hong Kong director Tang Ji Li was undertook a ceremony many years ago to become a disciple . Master Yu is a great loss to the martial arts world.
My Sifu CS Tang had the opportunity to interact with Grandmaster Yu on a number occasions in Beijing and in Hong Kong. The key lessons that he obtained from Master Yu were the use of a wider and lower stance to perform Zhan Zhuang and the use of tension and relaxation to train the body. When one placed one's hands on Master Yu's calves, one could feel the tensing and relaxing of the muscles in the form of a pulsing sensation as Master Yu trained his body in Zhan Zhuang. Below is a picture of my Sifu with Master Yu in Beijing in 2001.
