《撒放密诀》 - The Secret Theory of Sa Fang

This is a follow on post from the previous book - just to provide an explanation of where the term Sa Fang 撒放 originally comes from.  It is just another term for Fajin or issuing force. The term comes from the famous Taiji Master Li Yi Yu 李亦畬(1832—1892) who following on from Master Wang Zong Yue 王宗岳's aphorism  “粘連黏隨” "Stick to, Adhere and Follow" and Master Wu Yu Xiang 武禹襄' aphorism  “敷蓋對吞” "Contact, Cover, Resist, Swallow" came up with the aphorism “擎引鬆放” "Raise up, Draw in, Relax, Send out".

These three steps are sometimes referred to as “推手三部曲” or the push hands trilogy.
Master Li Yi Yu's poem is as follows:

擎  擎起彼身借彼力(中有靈字)
引  引到身前勁始蓄(中有斂字)
鬆  鬆開我勁勿使屈(中有靜字)
放  放時腰腳認端的(中有整字)

Raise up  Raise up the opponent's body, using his strength (Contains the idea of Nimbleness) 
Draw in   Draw in to the front of the body, begin to store the energy (Contains idea of Gathering) 
Relax      Relax my power without collapsing (Contains the idea of Stillness) 
Send out When sending out, the hips and feet are level / straight (Contains idea of in the proper Arrangement)

In other words, when the opponent attacks we should negate his attack and come under his center of gravity, absorbing his attack into a ball in front of the body, and storing energy by concaving the chest and sinking into the hips. However the body should be relaxed and but not collapsed otherwise you will fall over. When issuing power the power comes from the waist, hips and back leg and this should be executed with proper structure without power leakage.  

We have to understand that "Raise up, Draw in, Relax, Send Out"  “擎引鬆放” is an elaboration of Wu Yu Xiang's “敷蓋對吞” "Contact, Cover, Resist, Swallow", and concerns the correct process for issuing force “吐” or 發放。“敷蓋對吞” "Contact, Cover, Resist, Swallow" is used to negate the opponent's power,and to store power prior to release,it is the basis for "Sending Out" or fang “放”。“擎引鬆放” and “敷蓋對吞” both imply one another,but both analyze push hands from different angles. I also hope to post about Wu Yu Xiang at some point in the future also.
