Madam Wang Yu Fang, the second daughter of Master Wang Xiang Zhai, the founder of Yiquan died in Beijing two nights ago, she was 91. She was born in Beijing, but her ancestors came from Hubei province. The above picture is of my Sifu and Madam Wang in Beijing taken during the 90s. Although some of her contemporaries looked down on her as a woman, she trained diligently, possessed substantial gong li and left behind a legacy of many impressive students.
She began her study of martial arts at seven years old under Guo Yun Shen's 郭雲深 son Guo Yuan 郭圓, studying xingyi's five elements fist. By 13, she already her five elements fist was of an acceptable standard and she performed at the Shen County Guo Shu Conference. Her father saw that she loved martial arts, was willing to put in the hard work, and also had a quick mind so he taught her the Yiquan zhan zhuang method and the footwork. Afterwards, when Master Wang returned from Shanghai to Shen County, he encouraged Pu En Fu卜恩富、Zhang En Dong 張恩桐、Han Jiao 韓樵 to also come and do further research into martial arts. Wang Yu Fang also followed and trained with them and also learned Shuai Jiao and western boxing from Pu En Fu. Master Wang also transmitted the heart method of Yiquan to her so that she knew the theory behind the applications.
When she was 18 she went with her father to Shanghai and studied together with You Peng Xi 尤澎熙. You was a professor of Medicine who had studied in Germany, and so her acquaintance with the latest medical thinking began with her acquaintance with You.
In the 1950s, she helped her father to refine the Yiquan theory and accumulated experience on the medical benefits of Yiquan through working with and diagnosing patients. She came to Beijing and worked at the Beijing Central Hospital, Navy Hospital and the Baoding Hospital combining western medicine with traditional health methods.
In the 1960s, after Yiquan was recognized by the National Sports Committee, Wang started teaching in many parks across Beijing and accumulated many students.
In 1963, after the death of Wang Xiang Zhai, she continued to promote Yiquan, but due to her family being relocated to Xinjiang during the cultural revolution she was unable to teach, she continued to practice diligently and used yiquan zhan zhuang method to cure many chronic disesases.
In 1969 she returned to Beijing and started compiling the Yiquan materials into a coherent system and started developing her own style of Yiquan zhan zhuang.
In 1980 she was asked to be a teacher and consultant of the Beijing Qigong Research Association, and she organized a Workers Qigong Class with participants from 28 provinces.
In 1981 she took part in the first National Medical Qigong Scientific Research Conference, representing Beijing and she also taught zhan zhuang.
In July of 1989, she was invited to Hong Kong to speak on and teach Yiquan. In 1993 she was again invited to teach in Hong Kong, and was appointed as a Master Level teacher at the Hong Kong Yiquan association and trained a number of promising students to continue teaching after she left.
In 1999, she was invited by the Yiquan association of France to teach for two months in France.
After 50 years of research and practice, Wang Yu Fang has put together a complete system of Yiquan, a scientific zhan zhuang method. It includes the Health Shi Li 10 joint Method “健身試力十節功, the fighting Shi Li 10 joint method 技擊試力十節功, massage therapy and others. Sifu mentioned that the steadiness and penetrating nature of her gaze was the most impressive he had seen of all her Yiquan contemporaries. When practicing, her stare was like that of an eagle and cut through you like a knife.
